I’m sipping on a Pinot Noir after a long day at the AlwaysOn tech conference at Stanford University. (Well, what else would you drink in Northern California?)
We are one of the Global250. (See Kristi Grigsby’s post to find out what a cool deal that is)
So, what have I (the only creative soul in a sea of tech and financial geeks) observed? Here are a few, not so hard to digest nuggets:
Observation #1 – Baby Cos
The 2001 collapse of the dot.com bubble obviously left a big gap before the next wave of start ups could rise. What’s undeniable at this conference is that most attending companies were founded in the last 6 – 18 months, and very, very few have been in business prior to 2006. Celebrating (ok - more like reluctantly acknowledging) my 38th birthday on the first day of the conference, it seems kind of cruel to watch CEO speakers that I could have babysat! (But that’s fodder for a whole different blog.)
Observation #2 - Buzzwords
What’s Out:
Engage
What’s In:
Cloud Computing
Freemiums
Taste Networking
Tagging (yes, still)
What’s In, but should be Out:
Social Networking (come on, that’s soooo 2007!)
Observation #3 - New Names
With all these newbies, what are the popular naming conventions?
The biggest trend was consonants or numbers at the start or end:
QTech
CMail
BoomJ
Loop9
Peer39
rPath
VSee
We7
Also, one name made up of two words:
Greenplum
HiveLive
LiveOps
MatchMine
MyTrybe
RedBubble
SmackBiz
BazaarVoice
What is conspicuously missing from the new names?
“e” or “i” at the beginning of the name (sorry e-bay).
Okay, gotta go get a Red Mango frozen yogurt that you can only get in CA! More on the conference later…

Report as Inappropriate
Great recap of the more creative nuggets from this event...sometimes overlooked but always important to take notice of! One of the great benefits of getting out there and 'living' the world we're in every day - and sharing the knowledge with our entire team.
