SNS = social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.
Atlanta Business Chronicle blogger Urvaksh Karkaria commented on the findings of a recent Robert Half Technology survey of 1,400 chief information officers.

CIOs were asked, “Which of the following most closely describes your company’s policy on visiting social networking sites, such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, while at work?

Their responses:

  • Prohibited completely: 54%
  • Permitted for business use purpose only: 19%
  • Permitted for limited personal use: 16%
  • Permitted for any type of personal use: 10%
  • Don't know/no answer: 1%

The concern? “Using social networking sites may divert employees’ attention away from more pressing priorities, so it’s understandable that some companies limit access,” said Dave Willmer, executive director of Robert Half Technology. “For some professions, however, these sites can be leveraged as effective business tools, which may be why about one in five companies allows their use for work-related purposes.”

Interestingly, Neighborhood America has identified $1 million in cost savings and potential revenue for the brand by utilizing social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Download the enterprise social media case study to learn more.

In addition, we at Neighborhood America have found that the business limitations of these widely-used social networking sites are due in part to not being able to monitor the activity or value behind their use--which begs the case for advanced social analytics and data warehousing

Towards the end of his blog post, Mr. Karkaria states, "There is, however, a school of thought, that social networks (more Twitter, than Facebook) are the new way of doing business.Consider how corporate America has infiltrated once geek-only Twitter. Everyone from (@zappos) uses the micro-blogging site to get new customers and help satisfy existing ones."

We couldn't agree more.

Let us help you reign in your individual use of social networking sites (SNS) to leverage the transforming power of your customer, partner, and employee networks.
